One very positive thing to come out of Steve Jobs destruction of our beloved Flash Games is the rise of HTML5 games which are just objectively better. For all the negativity around Apples decision not to support, ultimately we are all better off.

Our team here at OSRadar used to review these games occasionally, especially those who take advantage of Linux in some capacity. We shelved that mainly because the writer featuring those moved on to other opportunities. But recently we received an email from one of our readers with a new game, and lamenting our non-coverage. So we gave it a try.

Calling itself Dinosaur Game, it turns out that it is literally just the Google Chrome Dinosaur jumping game. We played it, and yes, it’s really just that game but on a website with high scores.

In a perfect world, this version would incorporate new things into the game that the offline version simply cannot have. In our Slack conversation we decided that co-op play, different types of dinosaurs, and making a 3D version would have been a nice step up.

As a time-waster, this game is fine, but it doesn’t have anything unique about it unlike many of the other popular games that have come out of the HTML5 revolution.

Our team of three are giving this game two thumbs up and one thumbs down. Frankly, it’s hard to go wrong with a game that has proven to be the most addictive when you can’t go online.

Honestly, for me, Telegram is better than WhatsApp because it has many more options and is safer. However, it is also true that WhatsApp is more used and more widespread worldwide. Today I will show you how to install Telegram desktop on any Linux distribution in an easy and comfortable way.

Tele…what?

In the first place, What is Telegram? Well, Telegram is a messaging app with a focus on speed and security, it’s super-fast, simple and free. You can use Telegram on all your devices at the same time. In short, your messages sync seamlessly across any number of your phones, tablets or computers.

Some of the most powerful features that differentiate it from WhatsApp are the following:

Telegram groups can have up to 100,000 members. It supports replies, mentions, and hashtags that help maintain order and keep communication in large communities efficient.

If you want secrecy, try our device-specific Secret Chats with self-destructing messages, photos, and videos.

Telegram has bots. Bots are like small programs that run right inside Telegram. They are very useful to extends Telegram functionality.

The Telegram API is accessible. This allows anyone to develop an unofficial client. Don’t worry, security is something Telegram takes seriously.

There are many characteristics that make Telegram a perfect application. In my case, in particular, I have noticed that it is much faster and safer than WhatsApp.

Let’s install Telegram

If you want to install Telegram in any Linux distribution, I must tell you that it is something very simple. Telegram does take into account Linux users, creating an official client on a par with Windows and Mac OS. Already that speaks very well of it.

In the first place, you need to go to the official Telegram website.

Downloading Telegram client

Then, download the client for Linux.

When the download is complete, decompress the file. Next, open your file browser and you will see two files.

2.- Install Telegram on Debian 11 and any Linux distribution

Then, Telegram will send you a code via SMS. When you type it, the application will start and you will use it without any problem.

And that’s it.

Conclusion

Telegram is much better than WhatsApp not only because of its features but also because its desktop customers are very good. Installing these desktop clients is simple and very useful.

Nginx is one of the most popular web servers in the world. Even on a par with Apache. We already know that it stands out for its speed and ability to handle large requests. Now, I’ll show you how to install Nginx on Fedora 34.

Fedora 34 is a distribution sponsored by RHEL which makes it inherit several of its security policies. Of course Fedora 34 is oriented to the average Linux user, so no major security policies are required. However, it is one of the most secure Linux distributions out there. So it is very common to see that there are Linux developers who choose it for their web projects. This is where Nginx becomes almost indispensable.

About Nginx we have talked a lot on our website, however, I will briefly explain that it is an open source web server. Its main advantage over Apache is that it is very lightweight and response times to large requests are very low. That is, it is ideal if you are going to handle a lot of simulated connections. Or yes, the web application is complex and requires many requests to the server. In any case, we are in the presence of a fantastic web server. So, let us get Nginx on Fedora 34.

Install Nginx on Fedora 34

First of all, you need to know the name of the particular package. To do this, we’ll use dnf to get it. So, open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo dnf search nginx

1.- Searching for Nginx on Fedora 34

As you can see in the image, there are several packages related to
nginx
in the Fedora 34 repositories. However, we need to install the
nginx
package.

:~$ sudo dnf install nginx

2.- Install Nginx on Fedora 34

After confirm the process, the download and installation will begin.

Then, when the installation is finished, we must start the Nginx service in order for it to work. To do this, type the following command:

:~$ sudo systemctl start nginx

Also, if you want nginx to start with the system, run this command:

:~$ sudo systemctl enable nginx

Next, open your favorite web browser and go to http://localhost and you will see this.

3.- Nginx working on Fedora 34

So, that is it.

Conclusion

Installing Nginx is very simple but it is good to keep it in mind especially if you are new to this Linux distribution. Nginx is very powerful and makes many websites agile to the many requests made to it.

Tell us, do you like Nginx? did you find the post useful?

We are celebrating the launch of Fedora 34. So we are aware that many developers use it to do their daily work. So they probably need to install some database manager. We recently explained how to install Lamp in Fedora and there you could learn how to install MariaDB. However, it is true that many developers prefer to use PostgreSQL because of its performance. So, in this post, I will teach you how to install PostgreSQL on Fedora 34.

It is not necessary talk much about PostgreSQL. However, very briefly I will explain you what it is. It is a SQL database manager, open source and well known by application developers. Mainly because it has a considerably superior performance to others like MariaDB or MySQL. So we will have enterprise power in a community program. Sounds good, no?

PostgreSQL has an updated repository for Fedora. However, due to the recent release of Fedora 34, version 11 is available. So in this sense we will have no problems.

Install PostgreSQL on Fedora 34

While PostgreSQL is an application, it has many additional libraries to extend its functionality. Or, to make it work with other programming languages such as Java, Python, C++ or PHP. In addition, we can have access to other libraries of the program for development.

So, first of all, I am going to use DNF the Fedora package manager to look for all PostgreSQL related packages.

:~$ sudo dnf search postgresql

Using DNF for search PostgreSQL

As you can see, there are many packages related to PostgreSQL. But as I said before, they refer to libraries needed to extend the functionality.

Now, let’s install it.

:~$ sudo dnf install postgresql-server

2.- Install PostgreSQL on Fedora 34

Then you have to prepare PostgreSQL for the first use. So, we have to init the database and then, start the service. After that, test it.

:~$ sudo /usr/bin/postgresql-setup --initdb

3.- Initialize the sample database

Next, enable and start the service.

:~$ sudo systemctl enable postgresql
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/postgresql.service → /usr/lib/systemd/system/postgresql.service.
:~$ sudo systemctl start postgresql

Now, test the installation.

:~$ sudo su - postgres

And access to the PostgreSQL console.

:~$ psql

Then, list all databases.

:~$ \l

4.- PostgreSQL is correctly installed on Fedora 34

So, PostgreSQL is correctly installed.

Conclusion

PostgreSQL is a great database manager and today you have learned how to install it in Fedora 34. So as you can see it’s quite easy, just share this post with your friends.

Programming is an elementary part of computer science. It creates applications that solve some daily problems. You can make applications of all kinds and some oriented to statistics. So, this article will help you install R programming in Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04.

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS.In addition, it is also a very well documented language and has its own LaTeX-like documentation format.

Features

Among the advantages of R, is its great syntactic similarity with S-Plus, which has facilitated the migration of many users. Equally important is the fact that it is a language with a very active development cycle.

One of R’s strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed.

Another great advantage is that R is multiplatform, that is to say, it can be installed both in Windows and in any Linux distribution.

Let’s not talk anymore and we are going to install R programming on Ubuntu 18.04.

0. What you need

In the first place, it is necessary that you have installed Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04 which is the recommended platform for development with this language.

It is also necessary that you have a user who can execute commands in the terminal as root.

So, let’s start.

1. Upgrade the system

In order to have the latest security patches and thus ensure the proper functioning of the system, it is necessary to make a general update to all packages.

:~$ sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

Now, you can continue with the installation.

2. Add GPG keys for the R repository

A simple way to install R is through APT. To do this we must add the R repository, however, first you have to add the GPG key.

:~$ sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E298A3A825C0D65DFD57CBB651716619E084DAB9

Then, add the repository.

:~$ sudo
add-apt-repository "deb https://cloud.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs)-cran40/"

Now, you can install R programming.

3. Install R programming

Now just run the command to install R programming.

:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install r-base

1.- Install R programming

Now, you can start to use R.

4. Verify the installation and using R

Now, it is necessary to verify the installation that we have made. To do this, type on the terminal.

:~$ sudo -i R

And you’ll see R’s console.

5.- R console on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04

Now let’s make the typical “Hello World” using R.

6.- Hello World

5. Conclusion

R is not a programming language for all people or for all circumstances. On the other hand, it is a language rather oriented to manipulation of data for statistical purposes and that makes it a quite reliable alternative for your subject.

Many things happen in a network, especially if many users use it. Actually, we don’t know everything that happens on it, and that for some sysadmin or IT professionals is a problem. Basic or relevant information intersect in that exchange. Therefore, there are applications like Wireshark that help to collect statistics on the use of the network protocol and analyze them. With this in mind, today I will teach you how to install Wireshark on Ubuntu 20.04 and 18.04.

Wireshark is a free and opensource web analyzer. It allows you to know from a quite technical point of view what is happening in your network. With this, you can make statistics, specific monitoring or simply know its traffic.

Some of the main features of Wireshark are:

Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols, with more being added all the time.

Live capture and offline analysis.

Standard three-pane packet browser.

Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or via the TTY-mode TShark utility.
The most powerful display filters in the industry.

Rich VoIP analysis.

And many more. However, one of the most outstanding features is that it is cross-platform. In other words, you can install it on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and other systems.

So, let’s install Wireshark.

1. Install Wireshark on Ubuntu 20.04/18.04

To install Wireshark more easily on Ubuntu 16.04, it is necessary to use a PPA repository of its developers. We have two options to install, the developing version or the latest stable version. I’ll show you the process for both, but in this post, I’ll install the stable version. If you use Ubuntu 20.04/ 18.04 this is not necessary.

If you want to install the development version:

Open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dreibh/ppa
:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install wireshark

And that’s it.

Install the stable version:

It is always best to install the stable version of any program. That’s to avoid major bugs and surprises. It is clear that no application is free of bugs, but stable versions are less prone to them.

Open a Terminal and add the external repository with this command:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wireshark-dev/stable

1.- Adding the external repository

Next, refresh the APT cache.

:~$ sudo apt update

2.- Running the APT cache

Then install Wireshark.

:~$ sudo apt install wireshark

Even though Python is the most popular programming language actually, there is still confidence in Java. So you probably needed to make applications with this veteran language. Especially in the web environment that there are so many good languages and tools, Java still resists. So, to deploy web applications made in Java is Tomcat. With the main objective that you learn how to install Apache Tomcat on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10 is that this post has been written. Let us get started.

Apache Tomcat

Java and its multipurpose language and that make it so good and useful to learn. Well, after coding your web application, it gets to the point where you have to deploy it. To do this, it requires a server that can interpret that Java code. Remember that we are talking about web applications. And to deploy and serve it, nothing like Apache Tomcat.

Estricatemente speaking Tomcat is not a server but transforms the caught JPS into servlets that can serve the application in question.

On the other hand, Apache Tomcat is open source and can be installed on any system running Java.

Install Apache Tomcat on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

1) Install and configure Java on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

Apache Tomcat is an application made with Java. Therefore, the first step is to install Java on Debian 10.

Open a terminal session and run the following:

:~$ sudo apt install default-jre default-jdk

Then, check the java version.

:~$ java --version
openjdk 11.0.3 2019-04-16
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.3+7-post-Debian-5)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.3+7-post-Debian-5, mixed mode, sharing)

As you can see, Java version 11 has been installed. It is one of the most recent and with very good support.

Now, you have to modify the
/etc/environment
file and add the Java path.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/environment

And add the following:

JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/"

Save the changes and close the file.

The next step is to edit the .bashrc file and add the following:

:~$ sudo nano .bashrc

export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/"
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

1.- Editing the bash profile

Again, save the changes and close the file.

Next, refresh the bash.

:~$ source .bashrc

Now, type this command to test the Java path.

:~$ echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java

So, if you got the Java path from your computer, everything is correct.

2) Install Apache Tomcat on Ubunut 20.04 / Debian 10

For security reasons, it is convenient to create a new user for Tomcat. Also, add it to a group called tomcat.

:~$ sudo -i
:~# groupadd tomcat
:~# useradd -s /bin/false -g tomcat -d /opt/tomcat tomcat

2.- Creating a new user for apache

Now we can install Apache Tomcat. To do this, go to the
/opt
/ folder and download with
wget
.

:~# cd /opt/
:~# wget -c https://downloads.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-9/v9.0.39/bin/apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz
--2020-10-28 19:23:24-- https://downloads.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-9/v9.0.39/bin/apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz
Resolving downloads.apache.org (downloads.apache.org)... 88.99.95.219, 2a01:4f8:10a:201a::2
Connecting to downloads.apache.org (downloads.apache.org)|88.99.95.219|:443... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 11282879 (11M) [application/x-gzip]
Saving to: ‘apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz’
apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz 100%[=====================================================================================>] 10.76M 157KB/s in 1m 49s
2020-10-28 19:25:15 (101 KB/s) - ‘apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz’ saved [11282879/11282879]

Then, decompress it and rename the folder.

:~# tar -xzvf apache-tomcat-9.0.39.tar.gz
:~# mv apache-tomcat-9.0.39 tomcat

After that, you need to change the owner of the folder and assign the required permissions so that it can run smoothly. Remember that now, we are using the root user.

:~# chown -R tomcat:tomcat /opt/tomcat/
:~# chmod +x /opt/tomcat/bin/*

Now, on the .bashrc file add the CATALINA_HOME path.

:~# nano ~/.bashrc
export CATALINA_HOME=/opt/tomcat

Save the changes and close the file.

Then, refresh bash.

:~# source ~/.bashrc

After that, we can run Apache Tomcat. To do it, just type this command:

:~# /opt/tomcat/bin/startup.sh

4.- Tomcat is running

Next, open your web browser ad go
http://your-server:8080
. And you will see this.

5.- Apache Tomcat on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

If you want to set a password to improve security of the manager web app. So, open the
tomcat-users.xml

:~# nano /opt/tomcat/conf/tomcat-users.xml

In the
tomcat-user
section, you have to add the username and password.

<role rolename="manager-gui"/>
<user username="XXXXXX" password="XXXXXXX" roles="manager-gui,admin-gui"/>

6.- Change the username and password

Of course, replace the password for yours.

Then, restart Tomcat.

:~# ./shutdown.sh
:~# ./startup.sh

And go to the web browser again. Next, refresh the page. And that is it.

Conclusion

Apache Tomcat is the best solution to deploy and serve web applications made with Java. So if you program in Java, you should learn how to manipulate Tomcat. As you have learned in this post, it is not very complex to learn how to install it in Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10.

Hi! We currently spend a lot of time in front of the computer connected to the Internet. In fact, it is a very common activity either from the pc or a cell phone. Consequently, it is necessary to use web browsers. There are certainly many options to choose from. But to surf in a fast and uncomplicated way, it is best to use a lightweight web browser. So beyond the well-known Chrome or Firefoz, today we will see the best lightweight web browsers.

Avant

Avant is a lightweight browser that also offers speed in web browsing. In addition, its most attractive feature is the low system resource consumption. It also offers important security features. For example, it blocks ad and malware. In addition, it has other features such as a video downloader and download accelerator. If you want to try all its advantages, you can download it for free from here.

Maxthon

This is another light and fast proposal in the web browser sector. In addition, it is currently available for Windows, Android and iOS. In addition, it has been on the market for a long time which generates experience. Among its features is a proprietary storage system, an email client and a password manager. Perhaps its most striking feature is that it allows you to view two pages from the same window. It also offers a translation service and its own plugins. It even offers dual rendering engines. As a personal note, angeloma and I used to run it in our early days in computing. To try it out, download it from here.

Midori Browser

This is another alternative to Firefox or Chrome that is characterized by its smooth operation. In fact, it is a browser that uses the Webkit engine also used by Safari. In addition, it has CSS3 and HTML support and is available for both Linux and Windows systems. It is open source software that boasts of not collecting personal information. Otherwise, it consumes very few resources and allows browsing without distractions or advertising. You can download it from here.

Opera

This is a browser with a lot of time on the market. In fact, it was the first web browser I tested that was not Internet Explorer. It is a powerful program that is characterized by its speed when surfing. In addition, it has interesting functions of its own. Consequently, you can chat by different ways, work as a BitTorrent client, etc. However, its most attractive feature is its own VPN service. But it is also possible to take notes within the same browser, zoom and recover lost tabs. If you want to try it, go through this link.

SlimBrowser

As its name indicates, this browser offers lightness of use and fast and fluid navigation. It also has a user interface with multiple customizable windows. Consequently, it allows you to load several websites at the same time. This improves the user experience. At the same time, it allows secure searches thanks to the data protection system it features. Therefore, it increases privacy and security when browsing. In addition, there are also portable versions available. Anyway, a very interesting option that you can download from here.

Vivaldi

This browser was founded by the former CEO and co-founder of Opera. Therefore, it is defined as an improved version of this one. It offers speed and many customization options. It also protects from crawlers and annoying ads. Additionally, it offers speed and its own email client. On the other hand, Vivaldi is available for Windows, Android, macOS and Linux.

Yandex Browser

This is a not very well known browser that presents a great speed and fluidity when moving through the Internet. The negative is that it does not support installation of extensions. However, it is very fast and easy to use. It also incorporates a turbo mode for slow connections. We can also customize the home page. Consequently, it will show what we are interested or like from the beginning. If you want to try it, you can do it from this link.

UR Browser

This web browser is based on Chromium. However, it has a lot of changes to navigate faster and save resources. For example, it supports Chrome extensions. In addition, it has two modes of operation: a minimalist mode, which saves more resources. And another full of features that allows you to set up a VPN to improve privacy and use 3D backgrounds. This browser has a download manager included that allows you to download files much faster. This is achieved by dividing them into smaller parts. In addition, it has 3 privacy modes so that users can choose the one that best suits their needs. You can download it from here.

Hello! From time to time we get ourselves with really cool apps. This time we will talk about Etherpad. He is a web editor based on real time collaboration. It allows several authors to edit a text document simultaneously. In addition, it displays all participants in the edits in real time. In addition to the ability to display each author’s text in a different color. Another attraction is a chat window in the sidebar to allow direct communication. Similarly, the goal of this app is simplicity. Well, today I introduce you to Etherpad, a great open source collaborative editor.

Downloading and installing Etherpad

The first thing you have to do is download the latest version for Windows from this link. Etherpad is a free open source project. So you won’t pay anything for the download. The file is compressed, so after downloading it, please unzip it at any location. Please note that Etherpad requires Node.js. Don’t worry, here I show you a tutorial to download and configure it. On the other hand, the download also includes its preconfigured node.js version. So first run the node.exe file. Then please run the start.bat file.

Running the start.bat file

A window with a running CMD is immediately displayed.

The next step is to open the following address in a web browser: http://localhost:9001/

Etherpad initial screen

First steps with Etherpad

To use it, just create a pad and share a link. Then you are ready to start working together with other people. Etherpad allows collaborative editing of documents in real time. Consequently, it is possible to export to many formats. Additionally, you can expand its possibilities through plugins created by the community. As mentioned, user collaboration is very important. Moreover, this collaboration is not reduced to the writing of the participants. In fact, there is communication by chat. And it is even possible to establish video calls for more direct contact.

The installation process can be done on our system or server, as we did in this example. On the other hand, you can also use one of the public instances available in this list. Once there, all you have to do is enter a name for the document or open it directly. A blank sheet of paper will then appear, ready to collect the contents.

Creating a new pad

The interface is similar to that of any other text editor. However, in the upper right corner are the most important options. For example, the export of the document and the options for sharing it with collaborators. In addition, in the lower right corner are the chat controls. In short, Etherpad is a great open source collaborative editor. From now on, you only have to explore the functions of the app. In the GitHub repository, you will get very useful information. Bye!

Hello! We certainly use the computer as a data storage site. However, lately the trend is to store information in the cloud. This is logical, as we are increasingly using web browsers for daily tasks. Also, if you are an Android user or interact with Google services, then you might use Chrome. On the other hand, Windows users have the alternative of merging the best of both ecosystems. Indeed, it is possible to add items such as Google contacts and calendar to Windows 10. Consequently, native Windows apps allow data to be synchronized and displayed at any time. Even without internet access. Well, let’s see how to integrate Google calendar and contacts in Windows 10.

The key element is Gmail and its integration to Windows.

Indeed, in order to integrate these elements into Windows 10, it is necessary to add a Gmail account to the operating system. But don’t worry, here we show you how to do it. In that post we saw how to import the emails and the inbox into the computer. Then, it is necessary to activate the synchronization of the calendar and the contact book. With this in mind, press the Win+I combination to enter the Windows settings. Once there, click on Accounts.
