Hello, friends in this post, you will learn how to install and configure Apache Guacamole in Debian 10. It will be a step by step guide where you can get the same result as me.

According to the official website of Apache Guacamole:

Apache Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway. It supports standard protocols like VNC, RDP, and SSH. We call it clientless because no plugins or client software are required. Thanks to HTML5, once Guacamole is installed on a server, all you need to access your desktops is a web browser.

So Guacamole’s main use is as a client for server administration. Therefore it is quite useful in the case of remote work.

The installation and configuration of Apache Guacamole takes a few steps but is not complicated.

So, let’s get started

Install and configure Apache Guacamole on Debian 10

Apache Guacamole Installation

We will be able to install Apache Guacamole from the previously compiled binaries. However, it is necessary to compile it from the source code to set a parameter.

On the other hand, compiling a program from the source code is a good way to make it more stable and to get the latest version available.

So, start a terminal session and install the necessary packages for the compilation.

sudo apt install build-essential libcairo2-dev libjpeg62-turbo-dev libpng-dev libtool-bin libossp-uuid-dev libvncserver-dev freerdp2-dev libssh2-1-dev libtelnet-dev libwebsockets-dev libpulse-dev libvorbis-dev libwebp-dev libssl-dev libpango1. 0-dev libswscale-dev libavcodec-dev libavutil-dev libavformat-dev

1.- Installing the Apache Guacamole dependencies

Once you have the necessary packages, you can download the Apache Guacamole code. At the time of writing this post, the latest stable version is 1.2.0

wget -c http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/apache/guacamole/1.2.0/source/guacamole-server-1.2.0.tar.gz
--2020-10-21 13:45:26-- http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/apache/guacamole/1.2.0/source/guacamole-server-1.2.0.tar.gz

Then, use the tar command to decompress it and access the folder that is created

tar -xvf guacamole-server-1.2.0.tar.gz
cd guacamole-server-1.2.0

Now it is time to configure the package by entering an init directory.

./configure --with-init-dir=/etc/init.d

2.- Preparing the installation

And do the compilation:

make

And now the installation.

sudo make install

Once installed, it refreshes the system libraries by running

sudo ldconfig

It also refreshes the services of the system and systemd to ensure that Guacamole is present.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload

Now start the service and check the status of the service.

sudo systemctl start guacd.service

As you can see from the screen output of the command, Apache Guacamole is installed and running correctly.

2.- Install the Apache Guacamole Client

The Apache Guacamole web client is a marvel but it is made with Java technology. Therefore you have to install a Java Servlet like Tomcat.

sudo apt install tomcat9 tomcat9-admin tomcat9-common tomcat9-user

After the installation, you can download the Apache Guacamole web application with the wget command. Again, at the time of writing this post, the latest version is 1.2.0

cd
wget https://downloads.apache.org/guacamole/1.2.0/binary/guacamole-1.2.0.war

Now, move the downloaded file to the Tomcat folder to install it. Take advantage of the opportunity, to rename it to a simpler name like guacamole.war

sudo mv guacamole-1.2.0.war /var/lib/tomcat9/webapps/guacamole.war

And to implement the changes, restart the services of Tomcat and Guacamole.

sudo systemctl restart tomcat9 guacd

3.- Configuring Apache Guacamole on Debian10

Now we have to make some configurations before using Apache Guacamole. To do this, create the configuration folder:

sudo mkdir /etc/guacamole/

And also the configuration file which for now will not be very extensive:

sudo nano /etc/guacamole/guacamole.properties

And add the following:

guacd-hostname: localhost
guacd-port: 4822
auth-provider: net.sourceforge.guacamole.net basic.BasicFileAuthenticationProvider
basic-user-mapping: /etc/guacamole/user-mapping.xml

4.- Configuring Apache Guacamole on Debian 10

In this file, you can change the value of the port. Although we will leave it with the default.

Save the changes and close the editor.

Now we have to generate a hash code for a password that we define. To do this, execute the following command:

echo -n [your-password] | openssl md5

In my case:

echo -n osradar123 | openssl md5

This will generate a screen output similar to this one:

f5779e76981e3a855340255d1dd9da12

As you can see in the previously created configuration file, other settings are defined and stored in the file
/etc/guacamole/user-mapping.xml

So, create it

sudo nano /etc/guacamole/user-mapping.xml

And adds the following content:

<user-mapping>
!-- Per-user authentication and config information -->
<authorize
     <username="username"
    < password="md5code"
    <encoding="md5">

<connection name="default">
    <protocol>vnc</protocol>
    <param name="hostname">localhost</param>
    <param name="port">5901</param>
    <param name="password">vnc_password</param>
</connection>

</authorize>

</user-mapping>

5.- Preparing Apache Guacamole

Then save the changes, close the file, and apply the changes restarting the Apache Guacamole and Tomcat services.

sudo systemctl restart tomcat9 guacd

4.- Install TigerVNC

On Linux, we have many applications that use the VNC protocol but we will opt for TigerVNC

So, install it with the following command:

sudo apt install tigervnc-standalone-server

Then I start with this one:

vncserver

During the execution of the command you will be asked to set the password that VNC will use.

Now go back to the
/etc/guacamole/user-mapping.xml
file and in the
vncpassword
field type the one you defined.

Apply the changes by restarting the services:

sudo systemctl restart tomcat9 guacd

As TigerVNC is not distributed as a systemd service, it is advisable to create a new entry manually:

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@.service

And add the following:

[Unit]

Remember to change the values for
User
,
Group
and
WorkingDirectory

Save the changes and close the editor.

Then, close the X session that TigerVNC started when you started it.

vncserver -kill :1

And now, start the service using the systemctl command.

sudo systemctl start vncserver@1.service

Enable it to start with the system:

sudo systemctl enable vncserver@1.service

The new version of Ubuntu is now available, under the code name “groovy gorilla”. Ubuntu 20.10 focuses on improving and refining the user experience. Also, Ubuntu 20.10 is a short term version (STR), is shareable for 9 months. Likewise, it incorporates continuous central corrections, security patches, and new versions of applications.

On the other hand, with the short version, it continues the tradition of Ubuntu. To release a long term support version (LTS) every two years (and with support for five years) with three STRs in between.

Ubuntu 20.10:: What’s new?

The GNOME 3.38 release, which incorporates The addition of a “reset” button and New parental control for “Children” accounts. Where they include improvements in optimization. We leave you the post where they say all the new features that GNOME 3.38 incorporates.

The Ubiquity installer now has Microsoft Active Directory integration.

On the other hand, Ubuntu 2.10 includes the 5.8 kernel, which incorporates the continued advancement of open-source Intel/Radeon graphics drivers. In addition to improved security features, we also leave you the 5.8 kernel post where it mentions everything.

The applications you have installed by default are Firefox 81, Thunderbid 78, and finally LibreOffice 7.0. This last one brings a great novelty of improved DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX compatibility. Similarly, we leave the article where we talk about LibreOffice 7.0

Restricted access to dmesg to administrator/root users.

In addition, it now allows easy sharing of the WI-FI connection, with a smartphone or tablet, by means of a QR code.

Many other package updates.

To download the image of the official Ubuntu 20.10 version, it is available in Ubuntu releases.

Conclusion

The latest version of Ubuntu incorporates the 5.8 kernel, which three improved support for AMD.

As far as the installation of Ubuntu is concerned, it now includes a new icon. In addition to very important integration with Active Directory of Windows servers.

In addition, the installer, we can see that the option to install the ZFS file system no longer has the word “Experimental”.

Normally if we use Linux on a production server, it is important to monitor it. On the other hand, in everyday use, many users do not. Some because they have hardware so powerful that they do not worry about it. Others because they do not have the necessary knowledge to interpret the data that can be thrown. However, there are tools that not only allow us to monitor the system but also allow us to optimize it. Very important tasks for the system to remain stable and fast. Many options, but today we will talk about Stacer, an optimizer and monitoring Linux tool. We will also show you how to install it in Ubuntu 20.04

Stacer is a great application that will help us optimize and monitor our Linux system. It has many advantages, starting because it is built with the Electron framework so its installation becomes easy. It also has a pretty graphical interface that will make the experience quite pleasant. All this being open source that will facilitate the adoption in our systems.

It is important to note that, this type of applications that are an optimizer and monitoring Linux tool, is necessary to keep an eye on the systems. In the same way, it will help us to delete packages and files not necessary for the system and thus save disk space. Finally, with Stacer, we will be able to manage Systemd services in a fast and easy way.

So, let us start to install and use it.

Monitoring Ubuntu 20.04 with Stacer

How to install it on Ubuntu 20.04?

Its installation is quite simple, just go to the download section and look for the package .DEB and download it. Remember that Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint use the .DEB format and RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, and OpenSUSE use the .RPM format.

On the other hand, there is another format called AppImage that can be used by the rest of Linux distributions. Even if you use Ubuntu and do not want to use the .DEB package you can use AppImage which is a portable and universal format.

If you choose the .DEB package, once you have downloaded it, open a terminal and run the following commands:

:~$ cd Downloads/
:~$ sudo dpkg -i stacer_1.1.0_amd64.deb

Remember that the file name will change with the version number. So you have to check it first.

If you opted for the .AppImage file. You need to make it executable to run.

:~$ cd Downloads/
:~$ chmod +x Stacer-1.1.0-x64.AppImage

Next, open it. Either through the main menu or by double-clicking on the AppImage file.

Monitoring Ubuntu 20.04 thanks to Stacer

As soon as you open it, you’ll see the following:

1.- Monitoring Ubuntu 20.04 with Stacer

On the left side, you will see all the options to monitor and optimize. As you can see, it is a very easy and intuitive application to use.

One of the most important options is the system cleaner. There you select what you want to clean, and thus you save space in the disk.

2.- Stacer – system cleaner

It is also possible to manage the systemd services with a great graphical interface. With Stacer, you will be able to start them, stop them as well as make or not to start them during system startup.

3.- Systemd service

Or, check the system resources.

4.- System resources

So, that’s it.

Conclusion

Stacer is a very useful tool to manage our system. This way we will have the necessary information about the behavior of it. But not only that but also, we can perform system maintenance tasks such as deleting unnecessary files.

Now you can use Stacer to monitoring Ubuntu 20.04

There is no doubt that the computer is an essential element in our lives. Indeed, its uses go beyond work or study. It allows us to enjoy leisure and entertainment. In fact, it is often used as a means of storing large amounts of data. From photos, videos, music, to work documents. Consequently, to lose this information can be very problematic. For this reason, it is important to have a backup of them. The reasons for data loss are multiple. From viruses or malware to the human factor. Although there are programs to recover deleted files, they are not perfect. For that reason, it is better to use alternatives to back up valuable data. Consequently, today we will see how to create backups in Windows 10 with FileFort Backup.

Keep your data safe with FileFort.

FileFort Backup is a program that allows you to back up your most important files quickly and securely. In addition, it allows you to save e-mails and documents, music, photos, and other files and folders. Additionally, backups can be saved to different destinations. Such as, hard disk, USB flash drives, DVD, Blu-ray, network and even ftp servers. On the other hand, this is a lightweight program that consumes almost no resources. Therefore, it can be used on older computers. In addition, the configuration wizard is very intuitive and user-friendly. Also, the backups can be done instantly or in a programmed way.

The wizard makes it easy to make backups.

The first thing you have to do is download the program for free from this link. It is an executable file that weighs less than 400 KB. Well, please run it and accept the license. Immediately the execution of the app will start. Most likely the wizard will start automatically. If not, please click New.

Launching the FileFort wizard

Please choose the files and folders to backup

First, select the files and folders to be backed up. By default, the Windows shortcuts appear. That is, my documents, my music and more. In addition, you can back up your emails. The path to each folder is also displayed. On the other hand, the user can add files and folders manually. With this in mind, just click on add folder and add files to select them. You can also include certain file extensions in the backup. On the contrary, the wizard also provides the option to exclude specific file types. Another interesting option is to filter files by weight. There is even an option to exclude videos, audio and images from the backup. After setting the parameters, press Next to continue.

Setting the backup values.

Select the location of the security backup.

Below are the options for saving the backup. Firstly, there are options for saving in the cloud. For example, services such as Google Drive or Dropbox. In addition to a remote FTP server. In the lower section, there are the options for physical storage. Such as hard drive, DVD Flash Drives, among others. Please note that to save to an FTP server you need to download additional free software. Finally, click on Next to continue.

Establishing the location of the backup

In this example, I have selected to save in a local folder. Consequently, choose the corresponding path.

Please select the location of the backup.

Select the type of backup.

Now it is time to select the type of backup. That is, full, historical or incremental. Then select the file type for the backup. The wizard recommends the creation of a BKZ file. It is also possible to encrypt the file by entering a password. Once finished, click on Next.

Select the type of backup.

Instantly run the copy or leave it programmed

In the final step, the wizard allows you to schedule the backup for a specific time or on a daily or weekly basis. Additionally, the wizard configures the backup to do so during system startup if the computer was turned off during the scheduled time. Now press next to start the backup.

Starting the backup process.

Finally, we have seen how to create backups in Windows 10 with FileFort Backup. This way you have a very complete tool to safeguard precious data. All right, that’s it for now. We will see you soon.

Hi! Every time you access a website using Windows 10, a lot happens. In fact, the system will store the credentials to access the site. Consequently, subsequent accesses will be easier. In addition, this data is stored in the credentials’ manager. Once there, the user can view or delete the saved credentials. As mentioned, these are very useful. For example, logging into websites, accessing connected applications and accessing networks. However, for security reasons it is possible to delete these credentials. This prevents other users from accessing the site using these parameters. Come with me to see how to remove Windows 10 network credentials.

Microsoft releases emergency update.

Security is one of the fundamental issues for Microsoft in Windows 10. In fact, since it was launched, the company has changed its upgrade methods. In fact, previously security updates were released on the second Tuesday of every month. Recently, important security updates will be released as soon as they are available. In this opportunity, Microsoft releases updates for Windows 10 and Visual Studio. The aim is to mitigate two serious vulnerabilities. In addition, this update comes after the most recent update for insiders. It puts an end to 87 vulnerabilities present in the operating system. Well, read on to see why Microsoft releases an emergency update for Windows 10 and Visual Studio.

The latest security hole in Windows 10 is caused by the HEVC codec.

The first error is listed as CVE-2020-17022, and affects all versions of Windows 10. Microsoft indicates that attackers can use image files. Consequently, when opened by a Windows app, attackers can execute malicious code remotely. Specifically, it affects images that use the HEVC codec. This update will not arrive through Windows Update. On the contrary, it will be done through the Microsoft Store. The store will update the device manufacturer’s HEVC application. Therefore, only those using this codec are affected. As this is a Store application, Windows Server editions are not affected.

To check if the system is affected, you must follow the following path:Windows Settings>Apps>HEVC >Advanced Options. Once there, please check if you have versions 1.0.32762.0, 1.0.32763.0 and later. These are the patched versions. If not, please hurry to update the system.

Malicious code execution in Visual Studio

The second major vulnerability, named CVE-2020-17023, is in Visual Studio. The company indicates that attackers can introduce malicious code into the package.json files. Consequently, when loaded into Visual Studio, they can execute this code to infect the computer with any type of malware. Depending on the user permissions, the attacker code can be executed with administrator permissions. Consequently, you have complete control over the infected computer. Package.json files are especially used in JavaScript projects and libraries. On the other hand, this language and its Node.js server technology are among the most popular technologies today.

Finally, we see how the attackers refine their security threats. For that reason, Microsoft releases an emergency update for Windows 10 and Visual Studio. Once again, the key is the common sense and intelligence of the user. That is, the system should certainly protect from any attack. However, most of the damages are caused by the user’s negligence. That’s why, when using Windows you must follow elementary security rules. For example, downloads should be made from official sites. In addition, depending on the needs of use, Windows Defender can be complemented with a good antivirus. All right, that’s it for today. If you want to know the latest in computer security, keep an eye on our updates. See you soon!

Hello! We use numerous applications in Windows 10 on a daily basis. However, these programs can fail and crash. That is, it does not respond to the commands given to it or it takes a long time to execute the actions. As a result, the system slows down and does not act correctly. Sometimes, this failure is caused by opening many programs simultaneously. Also, it can happen that the system does not meet the hardware requirements for the program. In those cases, it is best to close the program and restart it. But if the application does not respond, then it is necessary to force the task. For that reason, in this post we will see how to finish a task and force to close a program in Windows 10.

How to terminate an application or program in Windows 10 when it does not respond

The first step is to enter the task manager. As its name indicates, this item allows you to manage the processes running in the system. Well, to access it there are several options. In the first place you can invoke it from the quick link menu. With this in mind, press the Win+X combination. Alternatively, right-click on the Start button. Once there, click on Task Manager.

Entering the Task manager from the quick link menu

Another option is to press the combination Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Once there, you must click on the Processes tab. Then, please select the problem app. Then, right click and from the context menu, click on end task. Another option is to select the app. And then click on Finish task in the lower right corner. Finish the task of the problem program

Finish the task of the problem program

This process can be applied to background processes. Since, although they are not visible, they act so that the applications can work. Consequently, they can affect the performance of the system.

Ending a process in the background.
