Audios revolutionized the digital market in 2019, this happens because of consumer behavior. Where it is in constant transformation, giving as a result, the requirement for companies to adopt new marketing strategies. Also, all these developments give to the creation of podcasts, also bring with them the development of a manager for podcasts. Such is the case of the podcast manager we are going to talk about today, called Podgrab.

First of all, before talking about the Podgrab tool, let’s define podcasts, to be in context. Podcast is a series of episodes recorded in audio and transmitted online. They can make recordings in different formats, the most common being interviews between the guest and the presenter. Also, individual recordings where the presenter or presenters comment on a specific topic.

On the other hand, the word podcasts are the result of the union of the words. The first is iPod, which refers to the fact that this content is portable. The second is Broadcast, where it refers that the transmission follows the same model as radio transmissions.

What is Podgrab all about?

It is a self-hosted podcast manager, which automatically downloads the latest podcast episodes. That the user has previously defined, it is also a lightweight application. Built-in GO and uses a GNU GPL v3.0 license, so it is free software.

The creator’s intention regarding the tool was initially to solve a specific problem he had. Because shortly before the COVID pandemic, he started running, and he didn’t like to carry his phone. The creator added the podcasts to his smartwatch to connect with his Bluetooth headphones. Because most podcasting apps don’t expose mp3 files directly. So he decided to create this quick tool for himself.

For more information. Click here

How Podgrab differs from other podcast managers

First of all, Pdgrab allows the user to download the latest podcasts that the user has previously subscribed to. However, this manager does not have a built-in player, unlike many other applications. As well as Pocket Casts, Overcast among others, which do have a built-in player.

On the other hand, it has a search section, which allows the user to find the podcast he/she wants. In addition, the search is performed in iTunes. It also has an interface that adapts very well, both to mobile devices, tablets, and PC. However, when they are on the PC you can view all the covers of the podcast. While on the mobile device it is not so, although they are small details. Besides that, they appear in chronological order.

Similarly, podgrab allows the user to choose the number of episodes to download automatically. Finally, it allows you to import using the OPML file that most podcast applications have.

Conclusion

Although Podgrab is new to the market, it has nevertheless been well accepted by users. It also has a good interface for mobile devices, tablets, and PC.

However, that it does not have a built-in player, the creator has commented that he has been thinking about it. Besides, he has several projects for podgrab, we can deduce that one of them is the player.

A few days ago we talked about the RSS reader Fluent Reader, where we talked about the application and its features. Also, as its modern user interface, which is inspired by Fluent Design System. In addition, it is possible to mark articles as read or highlighted in an automatic way. It is also important to note that Fluent Reader is a free and open-source RSS feed reader. It is available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. However, on this occasion, it is to know how to install Fluen Reader.

On the other hand, if you want to know more about the application, we leave you the link to the article. Click here.

How to install Fluent Reader on Linux?

Fluent can be installed in three different ways. They are quite simple, but there is also the possibility of compiling the source code.

Fluen Reader mediante Snap

The first method of installation is with the help of Snap packages. In order to install the application on the system, you must have Snap support added to the system. Also, if you do not have the support added, you can follow the instructions detailed on its official website. Through the following link.

Now, once the basic installations have been carried out, the user must open the terminal and execute the following command:

sudo snap install fluent-reader –beta

Fluen Reader por los paquetes de Flatpak

The second method to install Fluent Reader on Linux is through Flatpak packages. Likewise, in order to perform this installation method, you must have Flatpak support added to your system.

Likewise, to install the Fluent Flatak package, the user must open a terminal and enter the following command:

flatpak install flathub me.hyliu.fluentreader

Fluen Reader from AppImage package

The last method to install the Fluent application is to download the AppImage package of the application. And simply give run permission to be able to launch Fluent on the system.

On the other hand, to obtain the latest AppImage package, the user must go to the following link.

At the moment, the application is in version 9.0.1 and to download that package. The user will open the terminal and insert the following:

wget https://github.com/yang991178/fluent-reader/releases/download/v0.9.1-beta/Fluent.Reader.0.9.1.AppImage

They give execution permissions with:

sudo chmod +x Fluent.Reader.0.9.1.AppImage

Finally, we launch the application with:

./Fluent.Reader.0.9.1.AppImage

Fluent Reader

And with this, we already have Fluent Reader installed, by downloading the AppImage packages.

Conclusion

The three methods of installation are quite simple, aimed at users who are not so experienced. Also included is the link about adding Snap support through its official website.

On the other hand, it is important to highlight as it was also mentioned in the article where we talked about the application. That this application is still in the beta phase but it is usable.

On certain occasions, users need to move a pdf to an image, for various reasons. In these cases, they should use programs or pages that facilitate this conversion. However, for this first month of the year, they will explain how to convert a pdf to images. For GNU/Linux systems, using the pdftoppm tool.

Pdftoppm is a tool that allows you to convert pages of a pdf file to image formats. As would be the case with JPG, PNG among others, it is also a command-line tool. That is, with pdftoppm the user can convert complete pdf documents to separate images. In addition, it allows you to specify the resolution of preferred images, and to scale and crop your images.

How to convert pdf files to images with pdftoppm

The first thing you need, to use the command line pdftoppm is to install it. You must install the package as follows depending on the distribution:

For Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and similar distributions, the following command is used:

sudo apt install poppler-utils

In RHEL, Centos or Fedora systems

sudo dnf install poppler-utils

On SUSE and OpenSuse

sudo zypper install poppler-tools

Finally, for systems like Arch and similar:

sudo pacman -S poppler

Once the installation is done, the user can start converting.

Convert PDF documents to image

As mentioned above, once the installation is complete, you can now convert. The usage syntax is as follows:

pdftoppm -( image_format) (pdf_file) (image_name)

Now we will proceed to show an example, the name is Mathematics_Examples.pdf will be converted to JPG format, under the name of Mathematics_example.

pdftoppm -jpg Mathematics_Examples.pdf Mathematics_example

When the command is executed, each page will be converted into images in JPG format.

Convert range of PDF pages to images.

The syntax for specifying the range is as follows:

pdftoppm -( image_format) -f N -l N (pdf_name) (image_name)

Where N means the number of the first page, to convert and -l N for the last page to convert.

For the following example, we will proceed to convert pages 5 to 10 of example_mathematics.pdf to JPG.

pdftoppm -jpg -f 5 -l 10 Example_mathematics.pdf Mathematics_example

Adjusting the quality of the conversion

It has been explained how to convert pdf documents to images, but in pdftoppm it converts PDF pages to images with a default DPI of 150. Similarly, to adjust, the user must use the number “rx” which specifies resolution X, and “-ry” the number which specifies resolution Y, in DPI.

For example:

pdftoppm -jpg -rx 300 -ry 300 Example_mathematics.pdf Mathematics_example

This way we indicate that the image will be 300×300 and in JPG format.

To consult, you can read the source. Click here.

Conclusion

Before the end of the first month of 2021, with a small tutorial to convert pdf documents to images. Through command lines, using the pdftoppm tool. Where the installation package, is available for the vast majority of the various Linux distributions.

To know more about the news and the turorials related to Linux. We invite you to read our section on Linux.

Linux Mint is the third favorite distribution for users. Also, this distro is always based on the latest LTS versions of Ubuntu. With the objective to guarantee that the operating system is totally stable and to guarantee support for a long duration. Likewise, Linux Mint releases a new version every six months, just like Ubuntu. Thanks to these, Linux Mint distributions have a one and a half year guarantee. On the other hand, in the middle of last year, the developers launched one of the most ambitious versions of this Linux. Linux Mint 20.0 “Ulyana” which promised to face Ubuntu, then six months later, comes the first update of the Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” distro.

On the other hand, Ulyssa is the name given to the first update of version 20. It is not a big update as version 20.0 was. However, the developers present a quite important update, where it incorporates a series of moderate changes and a lot of corrections and optimization.

To know more about, the news that brought the version 20.0. I invite you to read es post of Linux Mint 20.0

Also, this distribution comes by default with a Cinnamon desktop, however, the user can choose to install others, such as Xfce or MATE.

Linux Mint 20.1 Features

Users should note that the first update is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. This way, the user will find the main corrections and improvements incorporated by Canonical in the first revision of its last LTS.

Also, this new update incorporates by default the Linux Kernel 5.4, a rather old version of the kernel. However, developers have promised a separate ISO with the 5.8 Linux kernel for those with newer hardware.

On the other hand, the new incorporation is Hypnotix, a new program that is natively part of Linux. It is an IPTV player for M3U playlists, supporting live TV. It also includes a VOH section, where Hypnotix allows to watch movies, even TV series. Finally, by default, Hypnotix comes with a free IPTV provider called Free-IPTV. This provider only provides live TV channels that are available for free and public viewing.

On many occasions, it is necessary to access the same files, to remind us where they are stored. Slowly we come to use the file manager, to mark the folder that contains them to arrive faster.

Now in Linux Mint 20.1, if the user works with the same file frequently. Just select and right-click and select “add to favorites“.

Also, you’ll see a little star pop up in your panel. That’s where all favorite files are, just one click away. You’ll also find them in your application menu. The file manager now also has a dedicated section, where you can access but also manage your favorites.

On the other hand, the latest version of Cinnamon features improved performance, including a 5% rendering improvement in 4K. In addition to less use in its window management and a faster Javascript interpreter based on MozJS78.

On the other hand, it includes improvements in XApps. Where the clock format in Slick Greeter (the login screen) is now configurable.

Similarly, Xed can now automatically close brackets when used to edit source code. Also, Xviewer, the behaviors of the primary and secondary mouse wheels (tilt) are now configurable.

On the other hand, another interesting change is that Compiz makes a reappearance. Now allowing to activate all kinds of effects on our desktop and all windows. An excellent layer of customization that could not be missing in this Linux.

For more information about Linux Mint 20.1 click here.

Conclusion

The new update is not of great news, but the additions are helpful so that users get the most stability.

On the other hand, they have fixed a lot of bugs, to make Linux Mint more stable and faster than ever.

Finally, the first update will take place with 20.2 and 29.3 in September and December of this year.

Arch Linux is an open-source Linux distribution, which follows five principles. These are simplicity, modernity, pragmatism, user-centricity, and versatility. It also follows the continuous release model, meaning that there is no main launching and installation images are published every month. On the other hand, Arch Linux welcomes the 2021 with the first ISO of the year, where it incorporates some new features.

The distribution releases a new version every six months, or more as is the case with Debian. In addition, they usually publish a more extensive list of new releases than Rolling Releases such as Arch Linux. Similarly, the first image of Arch Linux this year is driven by the latest series of the Linux Kernel 5.10 LTS.

On the other hand, existing users can upgrade running:

sudo pacman -Syu

However, they probably have most of the updates installed.

What’s new on this new ISO?

Support for ARMv8.5 memory labeling extension.

Inclusion for support of the SM2 digital signature algorithm.

Chip performance enhancements – fs.

It now has memory suggestions for other processes.

Support for RISC-V architecture for booting into EFI systems.

Support for AMD SEV-ES for encryption of guest registration status in virtualized guests.

Finally, all updated packages, which include new versions of browsers and other software. As well as the security patches released in December 2020.

To know more about the new image. I send you to visit the official website.

Conclusion

This distribution uses Pacman which is a package manager. To install, remove, and update software packages.

This new image includes all the updates and security patches incorporated in the software repositories of the December 2020 distribution. However, to be a continuous release distribution. Existing users will get all these benefits through a standard.

On the other hand, this new Arch Linux installation image is based on Linux Kernel 5.10.3. Also, this distribution is a lightweight one for advanced users who always want the latest packages.

Finally, Arch Linux 2021 is here mainly to incorporate new implementations. Also users will not have to download hundreds of updates from the repositories after installing the GNU/Linux distribution.

For many users, obtaining privacy, personalization and above all, making the most of Linux resources. Because it is a multi-user system, this means that more than one person uses the same system at the same time. Also, among so many users, it is necessary that there is one who directs the rest, in this case, would be the system administrator. Similarly, it has the ability to manage the users and groups of the platform, creating, eliminating, or assigning users to different groups in the system. To do all this, we will use the command useradd.

However, this process may present some difficulties for those users who do not have much experience with the operating system. In this article, we will explain how to create new user accounts in Linux. Using the useradd command.

Useradd command

The command userdd, basically in Linux, allows users to create user accounts. Also, user accounts by parameter may or may not have:

Account name

User ID

Group ID

Name of person or service

Personal or home directory

Shell to use

The files to be modified will be passwd, shadow, group, and gshadow, all in the /etc directory.

On the other hand, the general syntax for the
useradd
command is:

useradd [OPTIONS] USERNAME

Similarly, only root users with sudo privileges can use the
useradd
command to create new user accounts.

Useradd command: how to create a new Linux user?

To create a new user account, simply enter the command
useradd
followed by user name.

For example, to create a user called marquez-osradar you execute the following command:

sudo useradd marquez-osradar

Subsequently, it runs without any other options. The
useradd
command creates a new user account using the default settings specified in the
/etc/default/useradd file

This command adds an entry to the files
/etc/passwd
,
/etc/shadow/
and
/etc/gshadow/

Likewise, to enter the user that has just been created, it is only necessary to set the password of that user. To do this, you need to run the
passwd
command followed by the username, like this:

sudo passwd marquez-osradar

Afterward, the system will invite you to confirm the password. Be sure to enter a strong password.

How to add a new user and create a home directory

In most of the various Linux distributions, when a new user account is created with the
useradd
command. The user’s home directory is not created at the same time.

To solve this problem, they use the option
-m (--create-home)
to create the user home directory as
/home/marquez-osradar

sudo useradd –m marquez-osradar

This command creates the new user’s home directory and makes a copy of files from the
/etc/skel
directory to the user’s home directory.

Within the home directory, the user can write, edit and delete files and directories.

-m
Means create the main directory if it does not exist.

Create a user with a specific home directory with the command useradd

By default, the
useradd
command creates the user’s home directory in /home . If the user wants to create the user’s home directory in another location, just use the
d (--home)
option

For example, create a new user named marquez-osradar with a home directory of
/opt/ marquez-osradar

sudo useradd -m -d /opt/ marquez-osradar marquez-osradar

-d
It means that they will use the main directory instead of the default directory.

Create a user a specific user ID

On Linux and all Unix-like operating systems, users identify it by a UID and a user name.

In addition, the user identifier (UID) is a unique integer assigned by the Linux system for each user. Similarly, the UID and other access control policies will be used to set the types of actions. That a user can exercise on system resources.

However, by default when a new user is created, the system assigns it the following UID. Which is available from the variety of specific user IDs in the
login.defs
file

To use this option, just enter
useradd
with the
-u (--uid)
option to create a user with a specific UID. For example, to create a user called marquez-osradar with a UID of 2000, enter the following:

sudo useradd -u 2000 marquez-osradar

-u
Means User ID, which must be unique and greater than 499.

If you want to check the user’s UID, just enter the command
id
:

id -u marquez-osradar

departure

2000

How to create a user with an expiration date in Linux

To set a date for the user’s account to become invalid, you can use the
-e (-expiredate)
option. This option is extremely useful for temporary accounts.

Similarly, if you want to do it easily and without problems, just specify the date in YYYY-MM-DD format.

For example, to create an account called marquez-osradar with an expiration date of December 31, 2020. Then execute the command as follows:

sudo useradd -e 2020-12-31 marquez-osradar

They can also use the
chage
command to check the expiry date of the account:

sudo chage -l marquez-osradar

With this, you will have already configured the account with an expiration date.

We leave you with the various articles on the commands. Clicking here.

Create a user and assign it to several groups

In the Linux operating system, there is the primary group and the secondary or supplementary group. Also, each group can belong specifically to a primary group, and zero or more secondary groups.

Similarly, the group creator must specify a list of subgroups that the user will be a member of with the
-g (--groups)

Next, you will see the command to create a new user with the name marquez-osradar whose primary group is students. Besides that, the secondary group are computer scientists and programmers.

sudo useradd -g estudiantes -G informaticos, programadores marquez-osradar

To check the user groups, enter the following command:

id marquez-osradar

departure

-g
Means the name or group number for the user’s default group.

-G
means list of names of additional groups, separated by commas, of which the user is a member.

Useradd Command: Set a Password

Once you have created a user account if the creator wants to have more privacy or protection. It is time to create a password for that user. It is advisable to use a password with a good level of security.

Combine upper and lower case letters and numbers.

Do not use sequences of numbers.

Add special characters.

To create the password, the set command is
passwd
followed by the user’s name. For example, to set the password for the user marquez-osradar is used:

passwd marquez-osradar

Once the command has been executed, your shell will ask you to enter your password and then confirm it. For security reasons, Linux doesn’t display the password or hidden characters while you type, so you should do so very carefully. Below is an example of the output on your terminal using the above command.

Changing password for user marquez-osardad
New password:
Retype new password:
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully.

Add an Shell to the new user

When you add a user without a shell it will take the default, but you have to define it. Similarly, the default shell for the user-created with the useradd command is sh. However, currently, sh is not used when there is bash and zsh.

On the other hand, the user can change his or her default shell. Although they can create a user with a different shell than the default one, using the
-s

Then, if the created one so wishes the new user to use bash as the default shell. Then you must execute the following command:

sudo useradd -s /bin/bash marquez-osradar

Conclusion

The creation of user accounts in Linux is used to obtain more privacy. In case more than one person is using the same system on the computer. Besides that Linux is a multi-user system, more than one can be using it at the same time.

Similarly, with the useradd command, it allows us to create user accounts. This means that they can monitor the control that this account has within the system. Likewise, the account created, can have an expiration date, change the directory, as to assign it to a group.

In the Linux operating system, it allows the possibility of choosing the desktop environment that the user wants to use. Obtaining, that the system adapts to the needs of the user and not the user adapts to the needs of the system. Also, one of the lightest and most versatile desktop environments that exist is XFCE. Similarly, this desktop environment is intended to be used by low resource computers, because it consumes little RAM memory. In addition, the team of developers after a year and four months of work, the team behind XFCE. Announces the release of its latest version XFCE 4.16, where it includes a consistent visual identity, and not mixing by chance from icons.

As mentioned in the official announcement, XFCE 4.16 “was a special cycle in many ways”. However, it wasn’t just the pandemic, one of the difficulties with respect to angles. Also, with the non-code related changes, it refers to the migration to GitLab. Because it’s a huge change in developer workflow but a step forward. In terms of being more friendly and welcoming to taxpayers.

Xfce 4.16: What’s new?

The current version of Xfce’s desktop environment includes several new features, where the bulk is located in the deepest part of the condom. We leave you the complete list of changes, which get an idea of the work behind that version. More logically, all changes are contributed to general improvements of the desktop and its tools.

On the other hand, one of the important changes is that the Xfce development team. Is that they passed the broom through the code and eliminated the support for the old GTK2. As a result, they take the step and move forward in completing the adoption of GTK3 to modernize the interface.

On the other hand, as mentioned above, one of the new features of Xfce 4.16 is visual identity. Leaving behind the themes created for the tuntun and for Xfce 4.16 its developers have worked to offer an experience as coherent as possible. However, this does not mean that Xfce changes to the skin, because it is nothing like that. Because for better or worse, the look of the default desktop is still very similar to the usual one. Although, they have paid more attention to refine the theme of icons under the same lines of designs. As mentioned in the official announcement “following the freedesktop.org nomenclature specification and a fixed color palette”.

Likewise, another of the most notable aspects of the current version of Xfce is the support for Client-Side Decorations or CSD. This allows graphic application software to be responsible when drawing its own window decorations. Historically the responsibility of the window manager, this way, operating systems like Xubuntu, will show a more colorful and uniform system.

Other highlights of Xfce 4.16

A new tab in “About Xfce” displays basic system information such as CPU and GPU type.

The possibility to search and filter in the Configuration Manager has been added.

The desktop received mostly bug fixes and small improvements, including the new default wallpaper.

The session manager offers improved support for the GPG 2.1 agent and the configuration dialog was visually enhanced.

Thunar has received many corrections and a few functions, such as pausing the copy/move operations.

Conclusion

With all these improvements that I present in Xfce 4.16, doubt also appears. If it recovers some fluidity that the graphic environment obtained several years ago.

Also, the current version of Xfce comes to complete the advances that had given with Xfce 4.14. Especially the attention to the user interface, to leave aside the support of GTK2 and modernize more.

Finally, Xfce version 4.16 is now official, but like other graphic environments, it is now only available in code form. So it is better to wait for Linux distributions to update the packages. In addition, the work has considered giving some retouching, adding and polishing small details. This can ultimately translate into a better user experience.
